How to Use Your iPad or iPhone to Make Vitamin D
Did you know that you can use your iPhone or iPad to help you make vitamin D?
There is actually an app, D-Minder, that can do just that.
No, it will not turn the screen of your mobile device into a UV-lamp.
Instead it will tell you the possibility to get vitamin D from sunlight at your location.
It does so by calculating when (or if) the sun is high enough in the sky for its UVB-rays to reach you.
If the sun is not high enough, the D-Minder app automatically calculates the next opportunity to make vitamin D from UVB in sunlight. It might be minutes, hours or days away.
Watch the video about the D-Minder below.
Thorough readers of my blog will notice that the app is using 35 degrees as the lower angle of the sun for UVB to reach you while I normally talk about 45-50 degrees. The fact is that UVB doesn’t have an on/off switch like a lamp. Instead the amount of UVB is gradually increasing or decreasing when the sun is rising or setting. Below 45 degrees, the time to get enough vitamin D will be much longer. Therefore you will need to expose yourself to unnecessary amounts of UVA in order to get the same amount of vitamin D.
As will all apps, D-Minder can be downloaded directly to your iPhone or iPad from the App Store. Or it can be installed via iTunes on your computer.
The D-Minder app comes in one free version and also in a Pro-version for 1.50$.
In the Pro version, you can see your exposures' history and you will be able to schedule future events for next exposures.
I have bought and installed the D-Minder Pro on both my iPhone and iPad. Unfortunately, for the location I am right now, D-Minder is telling me that the next opportunity to get vitamin D from sunlight lays 242 days in the future.
So, the only thing to do is to use the iPhone to find the nearest indoor tanning salon.
