A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children, and bone pain and tenderness as a result of a condition called osteomalacia in adults.

  4. There are so many ways to get vitamin D, and the sun is probably the best one. However, some people can’t get too much sun as they have skin cancer or they are at risk for it. I used to supplement with a vitamin d product, but now I just get it from my diet and pine pollen.

Vitamin D is an essential element for living organisms. It is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. Also it is produced endogenously when UV rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. Obtained vitamin D from sun exposure, food, and supplements is biologically inert and must undergo two hydroxylations in the body for activation.

A lot more research is needed into the illness as in my case I had PSC and there is very little medication that can help. The long term prognosis is a liver transplant. However, leading up to my transplant I never really understood if it was the extra vitamins that I took that stopped me having the transplant for so long, or was it something else.
